-- What Silence Is? --

John Herlihy

Do we know what silence is?

We think we do; but the question remains.

The North Star shinning in the twilight sky.

A silent harbinger that deep space protects.

Do you love me? I make bold to ask.

The silence says what I don’t want to hear.

My friend, where art thou, I sense you not.

Silence seeps into the crack of an endless night.

Death as silent as an owl flying through snow.

The snow falls quietly, a silent beauty left behind.

The wind sighs, but shadows move in silent stealth.

The moon rises in the silence of another world.

We ask again: Do we know what silence is?

The question remains; but the answer is so silent.

I REALLY LIKE THE LAST TWO LINES. THOSE THAT KNOW THE ANSWER CAN HARDLY EXPLAIN THE HIGH OR LOW DEPTH OF IT. ENJOYED, THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

I think the most wonderful silence I've ever known was sitting alongside a snowy trail in the December depths of Yellowstone. No one else was about. I'd been part of a group of snowmobilers (something I detest doing) but had stopped to allow them to go ahead. And I waited until they were completely gone and just sat there, in the snow, with the cold sun shining down on me. Never have I known such peace.

Your analogy surpasses expectations of many. So few take the time to allow silence and all its manifestations to enter their psyche. I often consider how little opportunity one has to truly experience silence... especially of the kinds you've eloquently focused on here. Nice work, John.
