-- One Last Moment --
John Herlihy
One last moment, utterly strange and unique,
One last moment, with our lives at their peak,
One last moment, not another moment more,
One last moment, for divine mercy to implore.
One last moment, earthly time finally at end,
One last moment, no further need to pretend,
One last moment, not even one second longer,
One last moment: what, then, will we ponder.
A rare moment to balance unique and strange,
A rare moment of all to take stock and arrange,
A rare moment not to witness a life on parade,
A rare moment to abort all thought of charade.
A strange moment that never occurred before,
A strange moment that does not ask for more,
A strange moment with a creaking at the door,
A strange moment as I lay down upon the floor.
One final moment as love now made manifest,
To revisit all the beauty that we ever professed.
The snowflakes of winter and the rains of spring,
All the unexpected love that our lives did bring.
Not everything, only life’s fullness is made plain;
The happiness we earned during this brief reign.
Things we suffered as loss not recalled or missed;
Happiness we will take with us into eternal bliss.

Love ya!
Jane
I prefer not to dwell on that single inevitability, that last moment, as anything other than trying to escape some sort of great pain by simply having my brain go unconscious and turn off all of the thoughts, pain, and threats of recent memory, not the history of my life. My life I have chronicled in two books that will live or burn in garbage heaps or landfills for long after my death. Perhaps dug up by future anthropologists, marveling at the life of one individual in the 20th and 21st centuries. I think that's cooler than worrying about what is to come after the lights go out.
