-- Light Rays of Stained Glass --
John Herlihy
As a young child,
I sang hymns in the light rays of stained glass.
Church windows smiled,
All the colors of the rainbow to amass.
The blessed scene,
Filled my heart with uplifting emotion.
While in the light gleam,
My soul sang in the depths of devotion.
A thing so simple,
This innocence that pours freely from the heart.
My voice so nimble,
As the light beams on my face break apart.
Nothing compares
To the reality of a child’s sincere belief.
No despair ever dares,
In the face of such overwhelming relief.
Better than rainbows,
This stained light haunting the church shadows.
As inner flame glows,
The breath of Holy Spirit its white light blows.

“ Nothing compares

In the face of such overwhelming relief.” That is lovely. ~~ djl
There is an undeniable awe when being surrounded by the beauty of spiritual stain glass works.
You captured the innocent awe and faith so well. Thank you.
I was dismayed when I stopped to see the Cologne Cathedral when I was in Germany. All of the lower windows were covered with some repeating stained-glass that had been a quick repair after Allied bombing took out the original glass during the war. Hopefully the original stained glass in all its beauty has been restored since. Some of that medieval work cannot be duplicated today.
