-- Why Oh Why --

John Herlihy

Why does the wind blow

Over grasses and streams?

How will we ever know

What all of this really means?

The wind we never see,

Yet we know it is there.

Lifting wings of the bee,

Trees in autumn laid bare.

Why do the ocean waves

Surge, mount, then crest?

The pent-up energy it saves,

To expire on the shore’s breast.

The ocean displays a rhythm,

A moodiness drawn from wind.

Its light drawn from sky’s prism,

No stillness there to rescind.

Why is the sky painted blue?

We know why night is black.

The waves of blue light knew,

What all the other colors lack.

The blue sky our celestial dome,

There above us, just out of reach.

Grand symbol of a heavenly home,

Its cobalt blue knows no breach.

Why do the mountains have a peak?

An accusatory finger pointed at sky.

The majestic land mass there to seek,

The one answer to the question why.

As a slumbering animal in repose,

Or elderly men with snowy crowns.

Spread out in clusters as they doze,

Talk in their sleep as a quake resounds.

Why do the distant stars twinkle?

A journey of light years they plod.

Each an angelic face with a dimple,

As they roam thru the city of God.

The night sky with stars bedecked,

Their beauty the night to adorn.

We give them our awed respect,

Until they disappear with the morn.

Why does the moon exhibit stages?

Shadows waxing/waning on its face.

Ever faithful down through the ages,

Always rising/setting in the right place.

The moon holds sway over the oceans,

Its forces affecting the seasonal tides.

Light of its moondust as magic potions,

In the hearts of millions its beauty resides.

We often ask these questions why,

Yet in our hearts we already know.

The answer lies within, never to lie,

An eternal flame always lit, aglow.

One of my brothers once had a t-shirt made for me that had "Whybaby" printed across the back. He would understand perfectly why I love this poem. Why, indeed!

This work caused me to think whether children or adults who are still adolescent in their desire to know truths, benefit more from a poetic and mystical addressing of the cosmic phenomena, or better we make sure they first know of the reality, then give them some lyrical ways to express that reality. The sad part of your questions is that were the questions posed on one of the late night shows, i.e., like Leno used to do in the streets, would the dumbed-down youngins give embarrassing answers... and that goes for your questions and those seeing merely a reality check on the education of oh so many. For those of us willing to give credence to poetic license, all is well. But, for others...

To a child first observing the world, these questions at three of four should be answered correctly. Because modern science has learned what causes every one of your questions that down through eons of our development were part of myth and mystery with various explanations that science has easily proven wrong.

Yet poets still love to use the myths rather than the reality because myths are much more romantic and mystical. Pliable for the writer and reader.

The latest that I heard is that with conservation measures, wind power alone can power the earth in a clean way. There are obstacles, like eagles being disoriented and hitting the blades, but there are ways of scaring eagles away that are now actually human driven but will be built into wind generators in the future. In the meantime, thousands of birds die from diving into open pipes sticking up from the ground and can't get out because they can't turn around. Most of the doves that smash into my windows survive the hit, but I don't know if they learn from the experience.

The mystery and wonder of this beautiful planet never ceases to amaze us,
Nature herself holds the mysteries deep within…and also the wonder of
our amazing bodies…regulating, heart beating, cleaning, renewing etc etc…and all without our intervention…a benign force would certainly seem to hold the key…
