-- Wearing Out My Welcome --
John Herlihy
Sometimes I think I wear out my welcome,
A bad penny that turns up every morning.
Another day arrives and ready or not I come,
Myself as poet in my own little way Intruding.
In remote corners of the globe, setting little fires,
With these poems of mine, I can say what I like.
Tolling as an echoing bell from church spires,
For once having my way, to uphold what is right.
Our lives seem like a series of tomorrows,
The days waiting patiently on cue to arrive.
Rain clouds speared thru the heart with rainbows,
Before disappearing in the mist never to survive.
A handful of likes, a couple of emojis as comments,
Meagre encouragement with very little to gain.
Outpourings of the heart in those verses of sonnets,
That cool down my burning ardor with gentle rain.
Often, I say to myself, No, I am not going to show up,
In the deluge of postings, would anyone miss me or care.
Then my other self tells me to be quiet and grow up,
Unless I want to fall down into an unwanted despair.
Posting a poem a day holds my rogue lassitude at bay,
Whether I am welcome or not really misses the point.
Even if only one person appreciates what I have to say,
Posting a poem is worth every effort, my day to anoint.

So, here I come... whether I'm welcome or not. I am a writer, and I have a voice to share!
