MIRROR POEMS

-- Seeing the Old Year Out --

John Herlihy

 

Time to see the old year out,

As I wonder where it has gone.

The days have fled as in a rout,

Sweet melody in one final gong.

I barely remember all the days,

All the days and nights blend.

Forgetfulness turns into a blaze,

Memory’s ashes into air ascend.

Once future hopes now passed,

Vanished like the morning mist.

Neither joys nor sorrows ever last,

They only linger behind as missed.

One final creak on the year’s door,

One final sound, then nevermore.

 

-- Seeing the New Year In --

Time to see the new year in,

As I wonder what will come.

Time to allow my head to spin,

New melody in life’s fabric spun.

I anticipate the fresh, new days,

Days and nights forward surge.

My expectations turn into blaze,

Fate’s sparks with dreams merge.

Once future hopes now passed,

Vanished like the morning mist.

New future hopes appearing fast,

To create realities in a life blessed.

A soft creak opens the year’s door,

As we wonder what life has in store.

May there be more good things in store and less bad, as we break the cycle may we form new habits and new hope for the future John. Happy New Year, good times ahead I pray :)

If the old maxim holds true, we should be able to see some "good" in the new year, having experienced enough "bad" for a lifetime. Let us hope it's true about good only realizable after knowing bad. Thanks for the hopeful thoughts.

Two visions seeming yin and yang, but each could be the other. Or each containing some of both. I really like this concept and how you wrote of it. Mirror poem #1 has only one yang attribute that I can see — “Sweet melody in one final gong.” Mirror poem #2 has only one yin that I can see — hopes “Vanished like the morning mist.” The construct of this was engaging for me. ~~ djl
