-- An Ordinary Night --
John Herlihy
The drama of twilight so fleeting
The battlefield of color now vanished
The night sky full of emerging stars
The night itself pitch dark, but for the stars
We see them, but hardly take notice
Surely, we would take notice
If they didn’t show up one night
What we have we never miss
If they appeared only once a year
How desperately we would miss them
The night itself pitch dark but for the stars
Like the stars, we take the night for granted
The moon, not yet risen, yet we know it will rise
The starlight magical, but that comes as no surprise
In some ways, they make darkness darker
Diamond dust lost in the shadows of night
Until the moon finally lifts its weary head
Over the horizon, a pale winter moon
Late for its appointment and waning to boot
The darkness not as dark as daylight is light
The midnight hour has passed its zenith
As night slips further into the dead of night
Night sounds have quieted into serene silence
It seems nothing moves, not even the wind
Dead of night indeed, only whispering psalms
The land breathes the rhythmic sleep of a sleeper
Does the night await the coming of dawn
As the crescent moon seeks the waiting horizon
Indeed, on the threshold of earth and sky a thread
A thread of light appears and the night knows why

Living in the desert whether sky is especially clear. You have experienced what most of us never get to do. Observe the sky at night during all seasons.
