-- Lonely Lamp --
John Herlihy
Oh, you lonely lamp of the night,
How we remember if you not near.
The brilliant bronze shield of light,
That we hold in our hearts so dear.
We gaze at the moon there drifting.
Does the old man see as he ponders?
Moonbeams fill our hearts uplifting,
The idle moon thru heaven wanders.
In wandering, moon enters my mind,
Pale rock, rough face, almost cruel.
When we do enter the moon’s mind,
We see before us this awesome jewel.
The full moon rose solo into twilight,
Turning day into the mystery of night.

But the moon would not exist at all if it weren't for the sun that so many creatures of the night depend upon the moon's pale light to navigate as they go about their business. If it weren't for the moon, we wouldn't have months in the year.
