-- Halfway There --
John Herlihy
In love, I sometimes end up halfway there;
Some barriers erected, my feelings to spare.
That initial meeting feels like an open door,
Slightly ajar, a light from a crack on the floor.
And yet, I tread softly, hold myself in reserve,
Never open floodgates, my feelings to preserve.
One step at a time, they say, takes two to tango;
Timid notes emerge as the hand strikes a banjo.
We live in an age to inspire questionable trust;
We may give ourselves away, but never in lust.
Our passions do say otherwise; but still I retreat;
Love should never lead down a one-way street.
I will let you all know when my love is fully there,
All barriers taken down that may my love impair.
