-- What the Sun Doesn’t Know --
John Herlihy
As the sun descends into the horizon,
After a long and laborious day.
The moon rises over the lip of the horizon,
As if searching to find its own way.
The moonlight in the darkness shines.
The haughty moon waxes full as a promise.
The glare of the harsh sun only blinds.
The naughty moon brings sun’s shine into eclipse.
The sunlight shines forth as if never spent.
The sorry moon wanes as a spent force.
Miserable orb, sun says, glowing of light lent,
Dwindles down to nothing as it runs its course.
The moon during the daylight hours sleeps,
The sun blames the moon napping the day long.
Blinded by day’s whiteout, each of the stars weeps,
As day’s rain pours forth its dark melancholy song.
As the moon stirs in evening, the sun doesn’t know,
How lonely the moon, pale wanderer over the earth.
Fulfilling its duty to illuminate the night in moonglow,
Its mission to steal sunlight since the time of its birth.
Two strangers in the heavens that never truly meet.
The moon encircling earth, as earth encircles the sun.
The cold moon a desolate place contrasting sun’s heat
Each with their message to bear, thru prisms of light spun
The sun never does know, the moon always by its side,
Ever following in the sun’s footsteps, its feelings to hide.
Behold the sun’s majesty, the source of heaven’s blue sky;
Behold the moon’s mystery, solitary lantern in night’s sky.
