-- Music of the Spheres --

   John Herlihy

The spheres of the universe

Move in a series of concentric circles,

Intertwined within one another.

The friction created by this motion

Generates a sound moving outward.

Sometimes, on a very quiet night,

As you gaze into the night sky,

And listen very carefully,

The sound apparent to our human ears,

None other than the music of the spheres.

Rhapsodies generated by the circular motion,

Harmonies captured in the canals of eager ears.

This the sound of silence I hear, who knows?

Possibly the silence of sound we could suppose.

No one truly knows, but the heart knows clear.

I listened most carefully as tender silence held dear.

When suddenly, there in the moonglow of night, sound

Deep in the hush of night, paradisal melodies abound

The music expands the infinity of the universe,

As if time finally stands still in the eternal moment.

As if a veil has been lifted for me to see through.

What do I see: nothing, but I hear everything.

We have filled volumes with facts of the creation,

And scratched but the surface of what we don’t know.

How pale and tedious the world without nature’s beauty.

How coldly remote the heavens without its enduring mystery.

IT'S AMAZING HOW GOD SPEAKS TO US ALL DIFFERENTLY AT DIFFERENT TIMES. NO TWO RELATIONS ARE EXACTLY ALIKE AND WHAT A PRIVILEDGE TO HEAR 'HIS' MUSIC. THE MUSIC OF THE SPHERES IS HEARD BY THE...SOUL...WITH MELODIES THAT TRANSFORM INTO WORDS SOOTHING, HEALING AND ENCOURAGING. IN GOOD TIMES, I DON'T HEAR THIS 'MUSIC' BUT I'VE FOUND THAT THERE IS A BLESSING IN TEARS. FOR IT ANOINTS THE EARS TO HEAR THE... MUSIC OF THE SPHERES. WONDERFUL, JOHN! THANK YOU...! LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

I was reminded of the opening of the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey where the music of Johan Strauss accompanied a giant colony rotating to provide gravity. Sound does not travel through space, but our minds automatically create music when we see moving objects. So the silence outer space can come alive in our minds in music if we only let it.

Your poem goes further than the sound of silence into the realm of discovery where the natural world of the universe is unfolding before our eyes in a magnificent way that we never thought it would. What a great time to be alive! And a great poem to match.

How true and noteworthy your "We have filled volumes with fats of the creation, and scratched but the surface of what we don't know." I often think that is the plan, the urging of our imagination to explore and at times, come up with a consensus that at least allows us to claim we are truly sentient beings utilizing what facts of creation we are endowed with and the intelligence to understand.

Sensational wondering of the mind. Have you seen the movie, “August Rush?” The young boy in the movie heard music in everything he encountered in Nature. It was a piece of creative genius.

"The music of the spheres" - it's all around us, John. I believe all celestial bodies vibrate, and that there is music in the spacing of the celestial spheres, like the geometry in the strings of a musical instrument, that effectively link together the visual and the aural. The creation proclaims the glory of the Creator. So incredible. But alas, in these failing bodies, we see and hear only through a glass darkly. Inspired thinking. Well received. Peace.... rlc
