-- The Poem’s Soul --

By John Herlihy

The poem as a thing of beauty,

Gift-wrapped in precious words.

Inside an unfathomable mystery,

Singing the arcane song of birds.

The poem read aloud to unwrap,

The hushed silence to invade, steal.

On the readers heart to gently tap,

The poem’s soul to unveil, reveal.

The words spoken, the silence left,

In the aftermath, as if church bells.

Verses as waves rolling over depth,

Secrets only the poet’s heart tells.

Scripted words of the poem’s soul,

To lay bare emotions the heart stole.

Revealing the inner self through poetic language is no small feat. So often, we read poetry that is mere facade, words describing only what is obvious, forgetting the proper choice of worlds will suggest and reveal a subtext to the piece. Therein we find the possibility of soul. We should not accept anything less... and of course, with you, that is no problem. Well written, John.

Very poetic description of the creation of a poem. You have a true poets soul.

A poem (can be) a thing of beauty. I agree, John. I believe that if you are arrantly truthful in your writing, your originality will flourish. The original poet loves language and becomes a channel for things far greater than self-seeking, or self-glorification. For a writer/poet to find their real voice they have to stand with people, not above them, as some do here with their (at times) inane and condescending opinions...... “There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.” Ernest Hemingway. Enjoyed this. Peace.... rlc

We all want to read poetic words that stir our souls. Of all that we write, only a very few can reach that lofty goal. The best are the ones that let the secrets out.
