-- The Certainty of Doubt --

By John Herlihy

The certainty of doubt

Lies in its surety to arrive.

Things known turn in rout,

Doubt left behind to survive.

Where do doubts come from?

How relentless at us they stare.

Why do they seem so certain?

From behind their dark curtain.

From some abyss they arise,

As if unwilling to remain there.

Shining sickle moons that rise,

Invading the night of my prayer.

Lingering shadows to the light,

Always lengthening, thickening.

Intruding with their dark night,

With doubtful hearts quickening.

Doubts born of a place unkind,

How do they live and survive?

Deeply lodged, there in the mind,

In whispers and cries, alive, alive.

Dust motes free floating in air,

Doubts to settle on the ground.

Fleeing from a heart in prayer,

Their cries bereft of all sound.

Yes, doubt is a many splendor emotion when it can urge one to dig deeper into the puzzle that has aroused caution. Worthwhile thoughts, John, for I believe a bit more doubting is good in one's search for the truth. Today, more than ever.

Doubting or questioning, or being distrustful or skeptical, has always been an integral part of my thinking, and has regularly been healthy and helpful in making the right decisions. It causes me to look deeper at the cause of my doubts, which in turn offers me a more edified perspective. On the other hand: The old axiom about 'giving someone the benefit of the doubt' has become (IMO) more idealistic than practical. Especially now, when so many have become Janus-faced, unsavory, untrustworthy, and violently disposed. Enjoyed these thoughts, John. I appreciate when a poet's insights cause thought. Peace.... r
