-- Breathless --

By John Herlihy

‘Twas night well past midnight,

Deep in the well of darkness.

In the final moments of night,

Restless wind finally died down.

The sickle of the moon hanging low,

Moonglow fading fast across the earth.

The stars as cold and bright as diamonds,

Shimmering in the wash of indigo ink.

The night cries as echoes drift away,

Leaving behind as empty sense of silence.

A brief rustle of feathers overhead,

Heard among hidden sleeping birds.

Then nothing more as night bowed down,

Waiting for the sun’s arrival, breathless.

On bended knees, in humble surrender,

Waiting for the dawn’s first breath of day.

The night sky marbled in the light of dawn,

The ageless curtain of night finally drawn.

Out of eternal darkness the night slowly seeps,

Dawn light in night’s tears as it gently weeps.

YOU HAVE PAINTED SUCH AN AWESOME WORK OF ART HERE...I ACTUALLY STOPPED AND SAW IT. BUT THEN, I FOUND I COULD THINK OF ONE WITHOUT CONSIDERING THE OTHER, JOHN. THE BEAUTEOUS DISPLAY OF NIGHT CONCEDING TO DAWN CAN ONLY BE RIVALED BY THE SPECTACULAR MOANFUL CRIES OF THE SUN AS IT SURRENDERS TO THE GRASP OF NIGHT. INDEED, BOTH OCCURRENCES, TOTALLY....BREATHLESS. DEAR POET...THANK YOU, I WILL KEEP THIS. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

I was nearly breathless with the beauty of this, especially the description of all the things we were made to see after the night ‘Twas well past midnight. Lovely work, John.

I read this to my wife this morning, John, and we discussed it over coffee. She was moved with the imagery. She especially liked: "The sickle of the moon hanging low," I like how you waited to introduce tail rhyme until the last strophe. And using "hanging, fading, shimmering, in the 2nd strophe was effective. Well done. Peace... r

You Look FatCalgary by RickthePoetWarrior

Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
