-- Sing As If You Can’t Be Heard --

By John Herlihy

Sing as if you can’t be heard,

Sing with the freedom of a bird.

Sing to inspire the heart’s content,

Sing as if you know what it meant.

Sing of your sorrow and your despair,

Sing no tomorrow, left behind a prayer.

Sing of fulfilment you hope to achieve,

Sing of all the lies that surely deceive.

Sing of the questions that all of us ask,

Sing of the answers as our major task.

Sing of sad feelings that sour and grate,

Sing of love songs that turned to hate.

Sing with the primal forces of your will,

Sing until your voice will finally be still.

If I was to sing I believe it would not take long for my voice to finally be still. Another poem to ponder. Enjoyed.

I sing every night before I go to bed. And have a willing listener in my partner. Often wishing together. I sing the old songs that I remember most of the words to and then I listen to the old songs by many great artists that have broken through to tell us something about life that makes them a "hit."

I will certainly follow your advice and sing until I can no more.

This birthed memories of singing in my mother's choir at church.
A wonderful reminder of what life used to be, and what it can be.

Wow and Wow, John. This made me sit up with eyes wide and savor every.single.line! I love this one! I found not one word needing changed or omitted. It flowed like the song it sings itself. Your title snatched me in right away with its wise soulful spirit of ‘bravery’. I think you were channeling. Channel some more, you are in the heart of the portal with this poem. Makes me want to take your lines as lyrics and sing this myself. Can’t memorize them, but can carry them on a piece of paper and make that paper tattered from wear. Thank you — what a gift! ~~ djl

A bit difficult to compete with that beautiful bird friend of yours, but with so many good reasons, I'll give it a try.
