-- The Long Light of Day --
By John Herlihy
The first light.
Entering the darkened stage.
The early light.
Turning an empty page.
The dawn light.
Awakening the day.
The long light.
With shadows pointing the way.
The noon light.
Shadowless and intense.
The afternoon light.
From a cloudless expanse.
The dying light.
Fading in the hush of twilight.
The lost light.
Gone into the depths of night.
The last light.
Beyond the horizon with precision.
The night light.
Stars lend their magical vision.
Daylight,
No need itself to explain.
Daylight,
Yet still makes itself plain.

Each day I get a little sun on the little patio between the garage and the house. But as the seasons change , the place I have to sun moves and especially the place where a beam above my head shades my face that can no longer take the direct sun even for 5 or 10 minutes. It is really interesting how the shadows and sunlight on that patio change throughout the year. A subject that photographers and artists will wait months to get the right light for their masterpiece. Poets, too.
