-- As the Heart Beats --

By John Herlihy

We all make mistakes and then we confess,

The days of our lives can be passed in duress.

Yet the touch of dawn/twilight feel as caress,

As the heart beats ever gently, oh so gently.

We set out to accomplish our actions with devotion,

We temper our thoughts with sentiments of emotion.

Our sorrows overtake our joys as if by magic potion,

As the heart beats steadily, beats oh so steadily.

The weave of shadow and light into our lives sewn,

We are as little children who found themselves grown.

We journey boldly forth with destination unknown,

As the heat beats courageously, oh so courageously.

We are ignored, dismissed, pushed around with a shove,

A sacred chalice we become when we be filled with love.

Blessed, lifted aloft, on the pure white wings of the dove,

As the heart beats rapturously, oh so rapturously.

In life, we often find ourselves betwixt and between,

A rock and a hard place, not knowing what things mean.

Yet solutions we find, the mirage not what it may seem,

As the heart beats inquiringly, oh so inquiringly.

A loved one has passed on, our rag of emotions wrung,

A life fully lived whose song has finally been sung.

A web intricately woven, silver and gold threads spun,

As the heart beats mournfully, oh so mournfully.

Who can account for life’s miracle, as if kissed,

The world now set aside, as if no longer missed.

Ready to pass thru the sun door, forever blessed,

As the spirit sings sweetly, oh so sweetly.
