-- And He Waited --
By John Herlihy
And he waited
Until the end of day
And then the day gone by
Replaced by waiting in the night.
Patient waiting it was,
As if there, in the dark.
In the heart of the waiting,
Already lay the desired arrival,
Also patiently waiting.
And if no arrival arrived,
Still, he patiently waited.
For there in the waiting,
No, there in the patience,
A thing of rare beauty,
Described in scripture
As patience beautiful.
For in the waiting lies hope,
Hope’s breath as sacred vow.
The road of waiting,
Paved with promise,
As if already arrived.
And so he waited,
Until the day was done.
Patiently waiting,
Until the new day was begun.
Waiting another day and more,
Arrival on that distant shore.
