-- What We Think of Love --

by John Herlihy

We think of love as ecstasy,

We think of love as bliss.

We little comprehend its mystery,

Only to find it something we miss.

We know so little of love,

We know so little of its intricacy.

How do wings uplift the dove,

Only to find it a thing of beauty.

We unleash love’s power of intimacy,

A fathomless well, remote and pure.

To weave oneself into a web of delicacy,

Into a secret only lovers can endure.

We think of love as something for others,

Something we desperately want to find.

Not just the love of sisters and brothers,

Hidden within a knot we hope to unwind.

We think of that vital presence blessed,

Near even when the loved one so far.

The joy of missing, joy of being missed,

Each illuminated by their private star.

While the loved one has foibles that annoy,

Lovable idiosyncrasies we tend to overlook.

Lovers never try to describe the limitless joy,

All the temptations that serve as bait on a hook.

Sometimes we think of the risk entailed,

A giving of one’s heart to another’s heart.

Only to see the heart finally assailed,

To end up finally as pieces broken apart.

We have no cause to think the lover gone,

An emotion to take leave – never.

Its melody runs through us as a song,

A sentiment that will echo in life forever.

We think of the love that was,

We think of the love that may have been.

No questions why, no answers because,

Only the facts, the where and the when.

We think of, search for, and fall in love,

The wonder, the loss, as it comes and goes.

Fall in love, fall out of love, a push and a shove,

When it will happen again, no one truly knows.

LOVE! AS MYSTERIOUS AS ITS MAKER, YET...AS REAL AS 'HE' IS TOO! IN WHATEVER WAY WE MAY MEET IT AND HOWEVER WE PARTAKE...IT IS A ROAD OF EMOTIONAL UPHEAVAL THAT WE ALL, AT LEAST ONCE, WILL TAKE! BETTER TO HAVE LOVED AND LOST, THEN NEVER TO HAVE LOVED...AT ALL! AMEN. THANKS FOR SHARING, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

You have covered the many nuances of love.

I see love as a deep emotion that one cannot deny. For example, someone has had love me for over thirty years. Each year, her love becomes stronger as I grow less attractive and able to give her a back the love she so desires. I wish I had the emotion for her that she has for me.

Love of course has many facets. Eros. Philia. Storge. Agape. Ludus. Pragma. Philautia (self-love). And what so many people struggle to find in this life (and hold onto) is the very thing The Creator has written into every human being's genetic structure - the need to be loved and respected. One thing I know for sure, real love can never be stolen or duplicated. That being said: there is a kind of sadness and yearning in this piece that is discernible to this reader. Thank you for sharing, John. I wish you well. r

Perhaps the subtextual message here is love or being love is a gift. Unfortunately, there are so many ways romantic love can turn out to be a ruse. Today, there is sufficient evidence that far too often love is used as a grifter's bag of tricks. When, however, one is fortunate to have an experience as you unfold in this treatise-like journey into love that counts, well... rare, but oh so worth the chance.
