-- Loud Thoughts --

By John Herlihy

Sometimes our thoughts are so loud,

We cannot even hear ourselves think.

A feeling of being alone in a big crowd,

Seeing without realizing that we blink.

Loud thoughts are never enough,

Their echoes also fade in the wind.

They are not made of the right stuff,

On the breast of incertitude pinnerd

Loud thoughts try to have their say,

So loud that they cannot be heard.

The tweeting of birds more convey,

Amplified thoughts as vision blurred.

Thoughts as loneliness crying for help,

Shouting in a crowd yet so very alone.

The quiet of solitude arriving by stealth,

Shapely and beautiful, as quiet as stone.

Loud thoughts listened to but not heard,

No virtue lies in the force of insistence.

Power lies in the quiet thought of a word,

Listened to by virtue of their persistence.

WELL...INTO EACH LIFE, THOUGHTS WILL FALL, AND SOMETIMES THEY ECHO ON A LOUD WALL. BUT ALL IN ALL, WHAT IS THE FUSS? FROM TIME TO TIME, SOONER OR LATER...IT HAPPENS TO ALL OF US. AMEN. ENJOYED, MY FRIEND AND THANKS. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

I love lines like "On the breast of incertitude pinned."

I agree that sometimes our thoughts block out all other stimuli, even someone trying to get our attention.

I think you might not want to include the last stanza. It has the right intent, but seems a bit forced.

Yes, the volume of thoughts can at times be deafening. I resonated with this piece as it related firmly with my state of mind while working in Hollywood. Nowadays, I find such concussions of loud thoughts are dealt with by some ohming. Thanks for posting.

I'm so pleased that I read this, John! I know the feeling all to well of being in a crowd yet feeling so alone. I have always felt a connection to your words. They heal me.

Love ya!

Your first two lines I find to stretch out to include everyone reading this poem, John. Universality in aces of spades. Beautiful line: “Shapely and beautiful, as quiet as stone.” And the concept of one single word holding the power of a worry stone — well that is a treasureful gift to hold on to. ~~ djl
