-- Love Light --

John Herlihy

Her eyes of night-sky blue,

Her breath with dawn dew,

Breathing melodies of twilight,

Echoing in the darkening night.

As a wild animal drawing near,

She stops, eyes alert, standing tall.

In full knowledge she is held dear,

With no evidence of any fear at all.

When her eyes fill with tears,

Her soft hand stroked my cheek.

In love together in future years,

No two hearts need more seek.

I see her love light, bravely burning,

My own love light, tenderly yearning.

I see this as a monumental change from what you have been writing lately. And then I saw the date, just after the beginning of the pandemic. And perhaps that gives me a clue for why you are writing this kind of poem at that time.

Like both Diana and Odin, I saw both the animalistic connotation and the perpetual idea of love running through all beings.

Thanks for posting it now.

As your poem points out, there's a lot to be said for the enigmatic nature of love and its ability to be personified in many ways. If only more people would take the time to allow themselves such thoughts as these, perhaps we'd realize fresh ways to appreciate love's magic.

At first read I thought your ‘She’ WAS an animal {as well humans are}, so it was a surprise “She” IS human; and I liked that part, the surprise that of course human eyes can be alert. They just so often are not. This last line carries the ache of longing into the realm of dreaming of having but not having. “With no evidence of any fear at all.” I’d like to HAVE THAT! Thank you for writing to/for all of us. I think your ink color writes melodies of twilight in the shade of night-sky blue. Thank you for letting us see it ~~ djl
