-- Hush and Listen Carefully --

by John Herlihy

Hush and listen carefully to the whisper of my prayer,

Sacred breath in a voice sounded to ward off despair.

Hush as the new dawn arrives in a poetry of words,

Listen carefully to the echoes of rhyming songbirds.

We are always yearning for someone, for something,

That will arrive unannounced on the wings of hope.

Any random blessing offered that our life may bring,

As we hang unceremoniously at the end of a rope.

Yearning for a beloved father who is no longer there,

The soul now departed though the voice still lingers.

Yearning for a loved mother with the breath of a prayer,

Her soul now departed as sand slipping thru fingers.

Yet the memory still arises, the memory still lives,

Arising out of the vapor of some realm unknown.

The serenity, the sweetness of a love that still gives,

Past and future into the fabric of life’s tapestry sewn.

With a sober heart that both sounds and beats,

With a searing love that both laughs and weeps.

As my many mountaineering ventures proved out, even high up on a clear day, one can hear the hush and subtle language of Nature below. You've captured much here and thoughts that are far to often ignored are put to the test. Now, hopefully these thoughts will be read and taken to heart.

Indeed. A gorgeous image interlaced with various scenarios for the moose and calves, with perhaps the threat of wolves. Enjoyed the message. r

Hi John! This is a gift of a read for me. The yellow mist and antlers offers the very mood of ‘Hush and Listen Carefully.’. You have captured the quietness and you have placed inside the Carefully part, the elements of mother and father. You have included their absence of body and presence of spirit still alive in you, John. “Write what you know,” and I feels here that you know of this mother/father presence. A painting in words — of tenderness and longing. Thank you ~~ djl

I read and tried to listen. I'm not a very good listener. This poem seems to be a departure from your usual poems. And a yearning for what your parents provided for you.

My parents are both gone. I'm happy that they did not hold me tight and not let me explore life the way I wanted. They let me leave at 18, but took me in again at 20 for 9 months. And then again, at 38 when I was transitioning in between jobs and my house was rented to someone else. They retired early and enjoyed 20 years free from the obligation of children and work. I have fond memories but do not wish them back.

Ron
