-- Retreat into Solitude --

John Herlihy

There are times when only solitude is the answer

In our tale.

Some unexpected disappointment, a life-changing event

Lost the holy grail.

A need to turn away from the contingencies of the world

And its cruelties.

To lay oneself down in the clearing of a wakeful sleep

Free of one’s duties.

An unhappiness, some misery, to bravely endure

A lasting sorrow.

The treachery of a friend, the rejection of a lover,

As we enter tomorrow.

To wrap oneself completely in the protective cocoon

Of being alone.

With absolutely no desire of intrusion or interruption

To be solitary prone.

The night draws close and the distant stars drift down,

All nature coming near.

The moon and its tributary moonbeams lend their frown

Another world held dear.

There to lie sequestered, to simply drain away

Every second, minute, hour.

To be emptied of this world, in another world to stay

Absorbing its special power.

To find in the sacred grove of quietude,

The much needed and soothing balm of solitude.

AT SOON TO BE 80...I LIVE ALONE. NOT BECAUSE I HAVE TO BUT BECAUSE I ELECT TO. SOLITUDE...FOR ME MORE OFTEN THAN NOT...IS A TOTAL BLESSING. PREPARED YESTERDAY...FOR TODAY. GOD IS REMARKABLE...THAT'S ALL I CAN SAY, AMEN! ENJOYED, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS.

As you suggest in this poem, there are many positive ways to utilize solitude and its defence against unwanted noise of disturbing behavior.
Your last stanza brings the connectedness of all your thoughts. Well done.

The need for solitude is all those things, yes. But there's also the need to simply BE. To be oneself with ONLY oneself. An intimate time devoted to personal communing, of becoming reacquainted and grounded with who we are at our center. Our creativity, our spirituality. Our very essence. Solitude heals open wounds as well as the daily nicks that life naturally inflicts, and it gives us the nourishment and strength we need to bloom in our resilience. It is, in the end, as necessary to us as food, water, and air.
