-- We Speak of Now --

by John Herlihy

We casually speak of now,

Without knowing what it means.

I guess now is always now,

But soon enough gone it seems.

Our thoughts turn to the future,

The profound arrival of now.

But when it finally arrives,

We feel a little let down somehow.

Indeed, now arrives and then gone,

Swept up into the current of the past.

The moments sing sweetly their song,

But the melodies, like mist, never last.

The sense of now we cannot escape,

In timely timelessness a life to create.

INDEED...WE SPEAK OF 'NOW'...WHICH FADES SO FLEETINGLY. BUT THEN, WHETHER GOOD OR BAD WE HAVE BEEN LIVING IN THE 'NOWS' OF OUR LIFE FROM OUR FIRST BREATH, AND BECAUSE IT HAS SHAPED US INTO WHO WE ARE TODAY...HOW GRATEFUL WE ARE FOR THE MOMENTS OF 'NOW'! IT MAKES ME THINK OF AND IMPROVISE JUST A LITTLE...'LET THERE BE LIGHT, NOW'... AMEN. A PROVOKER, INDEED...THANKS JOHN, GREAT WORK! LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

What I am finding in reading your poetry, John, is that your writing is traveling forward in new ways — profundity, form, and finesse. This one has a silky feel to it…much like the smooth sand going through that beautiful hourglass. Savory. ~~ djl

Your poem brings to mind the idea that many try and stop time from happening, as for those who do, there must be a disconnect in their thinking. Even though the now is short, one could say the past and future also have their limitations. How often have we seem young love exemplified by "Oh, I wish we could be in the space forever." I for one find the three parts of time are compatible with each other. about the only sure measure of time, as we've been taught, is when the sun goes down and rises again. However, with the age of computer technology, we now have a secondary means of being assured that time is passing: our iPhone or watch, among many other similar means of keeping time in digital format. Anyway, your piece gives food for thought. Thanks for positng.
