-- Release --

by John Herlihy

Finally, home where they belong,

For years echoed their sad song.

How long enduring unending grief,

Now a sense of bottomless relief.

Counting minutes of endless hours,

At the mercy of the higher powers.

Forever lost, those years of plenty,

Emptiness has never felt so empty.

Finally, this long-awaited release,

Raw prayer evoked without cease.

Forget not detainees do still grieve,

Threads of release hearts to weave.

The breath of freedom be imminent,

For all those souls who are innocent.

So much is haunting and unfair.
But to survive and live brings a new story to write.
Sometimes we need a reminder to keep going.

I can't imagine what it must be like. And like you wrote, it isn't over when they return home because they have been so traumatized that it will take a long time before they feel normal again.

A worthy poetic dedication to bravery and conviction. I'm left wondering who's next in this form of power-mongering. But, like many aspects of life the globe now faces, a cessation of such behavior has become a habitual form of leveraging a country's ability to get what they demand. Well done.
