-- Signature of Our Emotions --
by John Herlihy
Where and how and who would we ever be,
Without the fine signature of our emotions.
Bereft with no true sense of our humanity,
Without recourse to our long-held notions.
Think of ourselves when left totally alone,
No one else around and there on our own.
Are we mere structures of flesh and bone,
Or are we from shadows and light sewn?
There in the mind lives the persona of our ego,
Assess, take charge, following impulses of will.
Emotions make melodies as notes of a piano,
Mind sharp as a knife, heart with emotions to fill.
We laugh and we cry in life’s valleys and hills,
The incredible highs and lows of mood swings.
Our lives emotional, full of hardship and thrills,
The mind talks logic, the emotional heart sings.
The deep connection of senses and emotions,
The feeling of wonder as beauty fills our eyes.
Lyrical melodies fill our minds with notions,
On powers of appreciation, the world relies.
Love and hate, hope, fulfillment, and despair,
Each a unique signature of all that we can do.
Nothing so heavy that we cannot rightly bear,
Emotions to inform what we thought we knew.
Signature of our emotions, that’s who we are,
Reason of the mind with the heart combined.
Through darkness shines the light of each star,
The base metal of our being thru the soul shined

I naturally am not too emotional. For example, I find that hatred rarely crosses my mind or any other kind of urgent outburst that I would regret later. If what is bothering me is hurtful, I usually just stay quiet and reflect on why that person's so emotional about something that is not emotional at all, just logical.
If I get frustrated with something, I rarely act out. I usually just stop for a moment or even leave whatever is frustrating me for some time before I try to finish whatever it is I'm trying to get done.
