-- The Silence of Darkness --
by John Herlihy
There the day done, night has arrived,
Not sought, invited, nothing contrived.
I do wander aimlessly into the night,
Moonglow in darkness oh so bright.
Comforted by one enduring thought,
The night contains whatever I sought.
The echoing hush in night’s quietude,
The profound peace in night’s solitude.
Nights come and go, they pass us by,
We pay no attention and ask not why.
Occasionally we pause as night arrives,
We but one, the night has many lives.
Night sky with its portal into mystery,
Mystery with its portal into eternity.
The moon as a solitary candle burning,
The human heart in the night yearning.
Night’s spirit whispers thru the dark,
Listen to the silence of darkness, hark.

I find that a deep sleep my world is silent, finally. Regardless of where we live whether it be in the city that never sleeps or a forest where most of the creatures sleep, there are still the night sounds in darkness.
Come to think of it, neither the sun that gives us light makes a sound nor the moon with its pale light in the darkness makes any sound whatsoever. And, my growing hearing loss will probably make me totally deaf before I pass on. Making all of my existence totally silent. Only my excellent ability to see and to pick up words and sounds and sound them in my mind will remain from memory, thank goodness.
