-- The Burden of Proof --
by John Herlihy
What heaviness lies in the burden of proof;
What lightness lies in holding oneself aloof.
Others demand that we our beliefs prove;
I give no such account secure in my groove.
Content in the knowledge of what I believe,
Secure in the certainty of what I conceive.
Certainty indeed, from where does it come?
Words of the higher power beyond the sun.
Where to turn without such enduring insight,
To understand interactions of day and night?
The law-abiding harmony of celestial spheres,
The breath-taking silence that enters our ears.
The burden of proof weighs light in our hands;
Believe, be steadfast, make no more demands.
