-- On Being Ignored --
by John Herlihy
So sad the feeling of being ignored,
Empty faces filled with being bored.
Who are these people without care,
Tied up in knots with a vacant stare.
Ears closed, heads turned away,
No one cares what I have to say.
The poem heard as random notes,
A dead leaf across the pond floats.
To think this poem born of magic,
Could die as a mere whisper tragic.
I refused to let this under my skin,
To allow any negative feelings grim.
I stopped reading the poem aloud,
Without a murmur in the crowd.
Silence sounding as organ chord,
The ears deafened, faces bored.
And yet suddenly I felt oh so free,
They are them, I be more than me.
Just laid bare and cut to the bone,
Still, candlelight in my heart shone.
The poem lives on for all to reckon,
Sweet soul sentiments still beckon.
