-- The Hour Near --

by John Herlihy

They ask about the hour,

The true answer to hear.

A bell tolls in a far tower,

Indeed, the hour is near.

Waiting inspires patience,

When will the hour come.

Seeking to find resilience,

Whatever be the outcome.

Night surrenders the hour,

As the dawn appears bright.

Day’s bud blooms as flower,

Over the horizon flees night.

Midnight hour, hour of dawn,

Time beats hours in the heart.

Hour of the wolf and the fawn,

When day and night break apart.

In the hour, anticipation sweet,

The mythical moment laid bare.

Finally, the Lord God to greet,

I humbly bow my head in prayer.

The hour meets the eternal now,

Suddenly, the hour draws near.

Awareness beckoning somehow,

The call of the hour echoes here.

The hour never advanced or delayed,

Hovering as a premonition ever near.

Forever in its rightful place it stayed,

Held in the heart of humanity dear.

Hour of life and the hour of death,

Hour of mystery, hour of intrigue.

Hour to arrive when no time left,

Approaching suddenly as blitzkrieg.

A PROVOKER THAT PRODS THE MIND ADMIRABLY WITH PHRASES AND FINE RHYME SCHEME. NOW, TO BE PERFECTLY HONEST, I DO NOT DWELL ON SUCH AN HOUR, AT ALL. WHY? BECAUSE IT IS NOT IN MY HANDS, AT ALL. I KNOW NOT THE DAY NOR THE 'HOUR', FOR ALL OF THAT HAS BEEN MANDATED, ETCHED IN STONE...LONG BEFORE ALMIGHTY GOD BROUGHT ME FORTH AND GAVE ME MY FIRST BREATH. I DO NOT FEAR THIS PASSAGE FROM FINITE LIFE TO INFINITE LIFE ...AS MY FAITHFUL GOD WILL BE WITH ME, AS HE ALWAYS HAS BEEN. THANKS FOR SHARING, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Everyone at some point ponders the thought of death, and each has a particular lean. I trust, because I've held it for so long, that I will continue to feel comfortable for that time of parting this earth. I keep telling myself, and fuse into many of my poems, the idea of leaving for a new beginning. I have nothing to justify that, but it's a preference I hope to keep. Hang in there, John.

An hour is a bit like a moment, except longer.
