Simplicity
by John Herlihy
Simplicity is the hardest thing,
A gift that only God can bring.
We prefer complicated affairs,
Life is a game of musical chairs.
Many meanings in every word,
Never listen to anything heard.
Wanting, needing all intertwined,
Desire leaves true selves behind.
Wanting but not the wrong thing,
Sight of a firefly makes hearts sing.
All choices reduced to yes and no,
Simple choice into our lives to sew.
A drop of dew sits on a leafy blade,
Painted by a brush of precious jade.
The heart of things displays beauty,
In the soul of things lies simplicity.
