The Truth About Silence
by John Herlihy
The thing about silence
Is that It says so much
We live in a world of noise
Pay no attention to what we hear
Until that rare moment arrives
When we enter a world of silence
We begin to listen and to imagine
As we hear absolutely nothing
Only then do we begin to hear
The silence of dawn, the silence of snow
The silence of gentle breezes that blow
The silence of a forest, its shafts of light
The silence of stars in the dead of night
A lonely silence, solo without cease
The silence of solitude, filled with peace
The silence of the mind as inner calm
A heart-felt silence as sacred psalm
Empty depths in the silence of despair
Relief and ease in the silence of prayer
The silence of the past counted in years
The orbiting silence of celestial spheres
Otherworldly silence never to reckon
Beyond this our horizon, voices beckon

I am headed towards total deafness. If that happens before I die, I will be in perpetual silence like my mother was.
