Seeking Perfection
by John Herlihy
We at times feel something incomplete,
A hole there inside that needs to be filled.
I found a piece of the puzzle to complete,
When things fell into place, the heart stilled.
What happened? You didn’t know you lost,
With your finger on the pulse, witnessing.
Vanished without ever calculating the cost,
A piece of life’s jigsaw puzzle gone missing.
We think that everything in our lives is fine,
We all have our destiny, you yours, me mine.
The day arrives when you stand at an abyss,
Wondering what you lost, what will you miss.
In this world never perfect, always imperfect,
Always guessing what it means to be perfect.

I normally don't work on a poem very much. But the one I just posted, impelled me to pick it at it to get it more perfect than it already was. There's something to say for that and for those, like you, who try with every poem to get it as perfect as possible before posting.
