Finding Solitude

by John Herlihy

Loneliness haunted by the ghosts of what's missing,

Solitude enlivened by the awareness of life's blessing.

Why do we focus on the things that we don't have,

When the things that we do have can act as a salve?

I awaken to the sounds of the birds sweetly singing,

Awaken to a new dawn day with fresh light bringing.

I focus on activities that bring a sense of the positive,

I shun stray thoughts that bring a sense of the negative.

The voices in my mind can resurrect memories painful,

The silence in my mind invokes an attitude peaceful.

When I see myself in the mirror, it gives me the shivers,

Age lines branching out like tributaries of ancient rivers.

Old desires of gaining success, having riches and fame,

Now written in my face in these rivers with no name.

I tremble in fear the day passes me by without noticing,

I tremble in awe the day passes me by all things noticing.

Having spent an entire lifetime trying to be someone else,

Now having the time of my life trying to be no one else.

So life goes on, sometimes lonely, more often in solitude,

Content to still rise to the surface with a sense of gratitude.

I will still fill my pockets with rare pebbles or read a book,

I will pick the first flower of spring and place it in a nook.

I trust that the currents of my life will not my future impede,

Until I reached that universal ocean as a single, solitary reed.

INDEED, JOHN...LET US REVEL IN THIS QUIET PLACE WE HAVE ARRIVED AT, SOAR IN THE BLESSING OF OUR OWN HAT AND REST...IN THE WONDROUS FARE OF 'SOLITUDE'S FAT'. I DON'T KNOW ABOUT ANYONE ELSE, BUT I CAN ONLY PRAISE GOD THAT ALL MY LIFE...HE HAS PREPARED FOR THIS TIME IN MY LIFE AND, BECAUSE I KNOW THAT 'NOTHING' ON THIS SIDE IS PERFECT, I AM MORE THAN SATISFIED WITH IT! I AM DRAWN TO THE FIRST AND LAST STANZAS OF THIS WONDERFUL, ENJOYED SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

I like your take on solitude. It is something that everyone should try to find once in a while. Certainly does re-orient priorities.

I have a solitude much of my life and enjoy the peace it brings. But I do recall all the times that I was experiencing something phenomenal and wishing that I could have found someone, anyone, to be with me at that time and in that place. For sharing, as I did with my twin brother in my earlier life, stayed with me through all those solitary years.

Solitude is a rare commodity of humanness in this new year. Seems the chaotic nurturers are out is greater force than ever. The Emperor of the Western Hemisphere seems to have no limits as to how he can disrupt and drive the nature of solitude into oblivion. Yet, as your self-worth is explored in this call to arms of the inner self, to, as you say, not let the negative seep in. We all need to write out such means that we might have to embrace solitude as you have and stay well-read, but not impacted by the negative energies out there. Thanks for posting this testimony of a man who is still in touch.
