I Am Listening

by John Herlihy

I listen to a bubbling brook,

That murmurs secrets to me.

I listen to the spring rain,

That feels soothing to me.

I listen to the voice of the owl,

That hoots its wisdom to me.

I listen to the night crickets,

That convey insistence to me.

I listen to the twinkling stars,

That whisper mysteries to me.

I listen to the night wind,

As if it can speak to me.

I listen to nature’s silence,

It has so much to tell me.

The spirit will speak to me,

What needs to be heard.

What do I need to hear?

Speak to me, I am listening.

I AM A FIRM BELIEVER THAT THE LOVE OF GOD...IN ONE WAY ANOTHER...REACHES OUT FOR US, DAILY. COULD BE IN WHAT WE HEAR, SEE, TOUCH OR SMELL.BUT, INDEED, THROUGH OUR SENSES, GOD REACHES FOR THOSE WHO ARE AWARE. I ESPECIALLY LIKE YOUR LAST LINE, FOR THAT SHOULD BE THE RESPONSE OF EVERY OPEN HEART...SPEAK, LORD, I AM LISTENING. AMEN. LOVE, BLESSING AND FAITH...HIS+ INSPIRATIONS

As I read I was remembering some of those sounds that that I recall from my youth when I lived in the country and they were all so close, just right outdoors.

As my hearing approach's deafness, I don't even hear the roaring wind. But I still hear thunder when it's really close.

I now listen intently by reading the closed captions as others speak too fast on Zoom sessions.

I love the impact this poem has on my senses. I can feel what you are describing, or should I say I can feel it again. The imagery and word choice are gorgeous.

Ah, yes. One of the senses that is always awake, unlike sight, touch, taste, and smell. I'd never thought of it before that one's hearing never sleeps. You've picked an inspiring group of examples. Readers should take this poem to heart and close their eyes and take a listen.
