When the Day Is Done

by John Herlihy

When the day is done,

Down upon the earth.

New day sure to come,

A new day as new birth.

When the night is done,

Other nights in the wings.

Starlight in darkness spun,

As night’s soul gently sings.

Thus, life quietly goes on,

Far down upon the earth.

The globe forever spins on,

An ageless cycle of rebirth.

As peaceful as the day long,

Enduring as an endless song.

When the day is done, I take it out of the oven and eat it.

Seriously…

All life evolved with approximately half of every day in cool darkness and the other half in bright sun. There are some of us who are nocturnal and most of us who are awake during the day.

For those of us who rest at night, it's a time for us to let our bodies recharge and our minds re-organize the previous day and put it into our memory cells…often through dreams.

A lyrical gem of text and subtext. I'm particularly intrigued with your wordsmithing various ways the cycel of light and dark, beginning and end etc that reminds us all that we may understand and accept day and night, but your poem asks in its subtext for us to consider when we pass, might it merely be a modifying of a cosmic cycle, an end in order to allow a new beginning? Enjoyed this motivating piece immensely.
