We Never Do Know

by John Herlihy

We never do know what the future might bring,

We only come to know when the future arrives.

To know the future would hearts flutter or sing,

Knowledge that betokens if we are dead or alive.

Then the perennial question of wheres and whens,

Lost chances, unlikely prospects, the never agains.

We never know what may over the horizon arise,

Heaven-sent blessing that may fall from the skies.

They say that it is not the person that seeks luck,

Rather a lucky chance that seeks out the person.

Let your fishing hook fall quietly into the stream,

When you least expect it, a hooked fish will gleam.

Let the future bring with it, come whatever may,

The world but a bauble and we humans are at play.

AND WE ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO KNOW...'WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS'. I MEAN...WHAT WOULD BE THE NEED FOR 'FAITH' IN GOD IF WE ALREADY 'KNEW' WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN? THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS 'LUCK' WHERE GOD IS CONCERNED...ONLY TRUSTING HIS WILL AND 'BLESSINGS'. LIVING TOTALLY BY FAITH...TAKES PRACTICE, BUT IF WE REALLY WANT TO 'DEPEND ON GOD' AND LEAVE OUR FUTURE IN 'HIS HANDS'...HE WILL TEACH US HOW. AMEN. ENJOYED, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

The future is a mystery, with surprises that come along that nobody can imagine before. But, there are thinkers and researchers who have knowledge of trends that can predict quite well what the next big thing will be from careful observation.

There are even formulas that work to predict the cost of things show that economic decisions can be made without too much risk of failure.

As your poem articulates clearly, the future and its antiscipation is a mystery of many surprises. Your poem clearly suggests we not be so anxious for the future to be rewarding. Rather, let the future's rewards find your number. Enjoyed a lot.

Perhaps we fool ourselves thinking there is a 'human' antidote for the uncertainty we're facing now. Moment by moment, the future is mostly open, and each of us are writing how we fit into it by what we've chosen to believe. Life is an actively unfolding process in which we all participate, and none of us are the full bottle on anything. You are one of a handful of contributors here John that allows the reader to think, not just react. Thank you for sharing. Peace... rlc
