Language Barriers A Light-hearted look at the difference between UK English and US English An Englishman in an American Diner... He stepped inside and took a seat Then eyed the dessert cart When the waitress came, he said, “I’d like some Apple Tart?” The waitress looked astonished She jumped and gave a start Then shouted to her boss out back “This man wants Apple Tart!” The boss came through to see him And handed him a chart “This ‘ere is our price list If you’re wanting Apple Tart.” The Englishman was puzzled This language was an art But all he’d really come in for Was Tea and Apple Tart Finally the Englishman Decided to be smart He took a plate and served himself A slice of Apple Tart The boss watched in amazement The waitress did depart All that fuss for a piece of pie The Englishman called a tart. A light hearted look at the difference between UK English and US English. In America (certainly some parts) and Apple Tart is a prostitute. In England, an Apple Tart is an open topped pastry case with apple in it. We do recognise the term 'Tart' as attributed to a loose woman but an Apple Tart is only ever a tasty dessert. An English Pie always has a pastry top.

I AM AN AMERICAN AND THIS WORK HAS GIVEN ME SOME NEW INFORMATION. THE 'APPLE' PART OF THE DEFINITION WAS NEVER KNOWN TO ME, HOWEVER 'TART' NEVER MEANT A PROSITUTE OR LOOSE WOMEN TO ME. 'TART' TO ME MEANS A FLIPPANT, SASSY, NO MANNERS WOMAN WITH A NASTY ATTITUDE. YOU KNOW, YOU CAN BE ALL THESE THINGS AND NOT BE 'LOOSE', JUST A WOMAN WAS AN A-SOCIAL, HIGH STRUNG PERSONALITY THAT NOBODY WANTS TO BE BOTHERED WITH. FUNNY THAT I KNEW THAT THE ENGLISH CALL APPLE PIE, APPLE TART IF THERE IS NO COVERING TO IT. IN ANY CASE, THE 'TART' LINGO, I GUESS IT DEPENDS ON WHAT PART OF AMERICA ONE IS FROM?
