How strong his brow, how fervently 
His languid lips do plead my gaze 
When brown eyes inadvertently 
Entrap my heart and test my stays 

My thoughts are set to wandering 
Oh naive, girlish mind, be still! 
Such vain romantic pondering 
Can never form beyond my quill 

Although soft words of love I write 
Our separate worlds will ne'er be one 
His role to sit in bordered sight 
And mine to yearn for love undone 

Whilst girl in vibrant amber dress 
Who draws upon his lustful stare 
Enthroned, resplendent to impress 
But seems to be quite unaware 

Of how she taunts eternal beau 
His tortured brow upturned again 
To catch her youthful radiant glow 
And yet her eyes downcast remain 

I glance, covert, from framed confine 
My senses soar to fired affray 
And bid me dream that he be mine 
But there are rules we must obey 

Never can I yield his touch 
Nor have his eyes greet mine with love 
Our fate is sealed, our plight is such 
That this alone, must be enough.
