Frying pan crackles

with burning eggs

backdoor open for air

2 am on a Saturday night

or was it a Sunday morning?

My Father's drunken return

from a local dance

His eyes like knives

face like an erupting volcano

His anger rises.....

Slowly it explodes!

At my Mother--a dark rage

while we trembled

in our beds upstairs

angry words cut the walls

poured hate into the floor

till about 5 am

They both growled to bed

waking up the next afternoon

he smiled and says

" What is her problem?"

Till another night

at the local dance

when the Booze kings

Caressed him with their lies

and my Father

is back at the kitchen again

volcano slowly rising.....

This poem aches out into the breathing air. When you write what you know it reaches out and presses real flesh and blood into the reader's eyes. Your writing here does that to me. These words peel back and show the raw thing. Bare naked pain, so lacerating to read, so likely eviscerating to write. Keeping this to these few words is enormously effective. The experience condensed to the purest form of feeling: "...eyes like knives," . . face.....erupting..." "...words cut the walls" "...growled to bed." This poem weighs a ton. Excelllently expressed. ~~ Diana

it can be a 'reach'.... these backward looks into such painful parts of our young lives, yet it sometimes opens them up for healing when you have the talent to slam the words onto paper to re-examine under the glaring lights of others eyes. what i like to call 'getting naked' which is the talent that i strive for...its so cleansing...good writes...pat

So sad that children have to endure such things.
