Sanity Lost

I wrote this in the midst of the Covid period. There were people who made a killing (literally and figuratively) by various means. It was that tendency to strip people even of the flesh of the carcasses, in a bid to make more money, off of their dead that moved me to write this.

Is it good to be bad,

Sane to be mad,

Is it normal to be happy,

By making others sad?

Since when did worse become better,

And less become more?

How did rumours become facts,

And facts become folklore?

Why has berating become a pastime?

Is entertainment now so sublime?

When it comes to other’s feelings,

Why don’t we care a dime?

Why is there a sadistic pleasure,

When another bites the dust,

When did we lose our virtues,

Of respect, love and trust?

Do we really so hate love?

And really so love violence?

Are we so against peace,

Or even plain benevolence?

We make lucrative careers out of lying,

We benefit when loved ones are dying,

We celebrate and make merry,

When thousands are bereaved and crying.

Living with blind eyes and deaf ears,

And lame excuses to not face our fears,

Sinning away in ignorant bliss,

Repenting a dreadful end as it nears.

When will we realize,

 we can compete with empathy,

We need not have bitterness,

Or violence to gain progress.

A powerful poem that reflects the sad situation of our times. Well penned and thought provoking, Askwin.

Hi Ron,

Thank you very much for the reviews. I appreciate the time you take out to read each and every one of my poems, I feel obliged.

The last stanza that you see was a modification at the last minute,
the original ending was slightly different.

It went something like this:

"Are these signs that we should beware of?
Is this what Sybil and David hath fortelleth?
Is civilization, as we know it, close to an ending?
And Doomsday nigh hath cometh?"

Please tell share your inputs, I would love to hear from you.

Regards,
Ashwin

The Covid epidemic certainly did bring out the worst in us. And I don't know why, because it was really only a small glitch in the rather smooth road that most people have in life.

You have called out everyone of the ills that we do, largely out of selfishness and lack of empathy. We have begun to let government do it rather than taking care of our own. So many have given up. Just waiting to die.

I particularly like the last stanza except you lost that beautiful rhyme scheme. I tend to have the same problem.

Ron
