Back in the days when fences were constructed to lean on
I had my fathers smile my mother's apron now they're gone
Along with brother's camera and his filming laughter reels
Along with sister's bumbling ways and admiration reals ...

Erecting them can be a way of protecting or rejecting

Signs that say " Keep Out" it all depends what side your on
Back in the days when my dad build a fence for grapes and vines
I knew what belonged to other people and what was truly mine
Along with my cat, my bird, my three ring binder and my fence
Along with my heart and my soul, I knew what to let in, hence ?
To repeat the phrase Ron quoted: "Good fences makes good neighbors," a quote from a Robert Frost poem and also going back earlier to Benjamin Franklin and others thru history. So, you are in good company. As you said, fences can be used to the good and to the bad. Love the garden photo.

"Good fences make good neighbors," I read somewhere. And your poem illustrates that well. I owned two properties both an acre and a half. The first one was in an old 1928 community and was all grass and stone retaining walls. The second was cut into second growth mixed timber with some natural and man-made boundaries like the street, a valley, and a pond.
