One cannot ignore the self

How can one ignore that which they are, that which they daily see, that which they can only be...?

One cannot ignore the self…

You see the self in the mirror in the morning,

Knowing no one will be there for mourning,

The self does know you better than yourself,

The self does feel you better than itself…

To ignore the self would be to ignore life,

Living for the self we wish we were spared of strife,

Not one of us cannot admit to being anything but ourselves,

We try to be another and we find we are unable,

We can only be us or I or who we are as we do not live in world of fable…

Ignoring the self is not what we were born to do,

We need to find the self and enhance it,

We need to be ourselves although we can emulate others,

Some may wish to do so, being like their mothers or brothers,

But in the end we do have to be as we were born,

I am sorry to tell you this, please do not the messenger scorn…

So many questions of the self we do ask,

Until we find the answers we cannot in the self, bask,

We all try to be someone else, but it is only a temporary mask,

To stay as the self, to some, maybe a disagreeable task…

When we finally do die, with the self we are stuck,

No matter the mode of death, suicide or by a truck struck,

We know not at this time how we will leave this physical plain,

We do believe however, wherever we do go,

We cannot to this plain return again…

We need to find the self and enhance it,

Truer words were never spoken, my friend. I truly believe that finding the self, being happy with who we are, and trying to improve ourselves, not imitate others, is truly the key to happiness in life.
