Its not the seperation of church and state that is the problem, but the unification up and coming.

Americans should read the Constitution of The United States of America, and demand that all officers of government obey it, before we are delivered to the slaveyard.

Mr. Broome is correct. We do have diplomatic recognition of the Vatican. When the Rama Lama Ding Dong dies we'll honor him in order to tweak the Chinese.
As to the country being built on theocracy, that is mythology. Read Jefferson and Madison. Both were opposed to theism.
As long as there are math tests there will be fervent prayers in school and I don't object to that. (Although I think studying might be more efficacious.

To me Ed you have perfectly expressed the trouble religion brings to politics, thought it is one of the many subjects I know little about. But history tells us that most wars over the centuries have been caused by religion, which the politicians should never forget.

I appreciate your comments and stand beside you in the confused line!

This country was founded on religious freedom and the current administration (as with several others before it) seems to want nothing more than to roll us all up into one nice little ball and force feed us their own religious beliefs.

Separation of church and state is not only desirable but absolutely imperative if we are to embrace all that have come to this country to find their way.

We've been called "the great melting pot" because of the incredible diversity in our country for a reason. When we fly flags at half-staff for some religious leaders and not for others, we are subliminally stating that one religion is better or more accepted than another.

Would you want to live in a country where your freedoms are deemed less "acceptable" that someone else's?

Hey, Ed - The problem is that we DO have diplomatic relations with the Vatican. It is a NATION, a religious one, of course. but so is Israel. And, if we look closely enough, there are others which qualify. Perhaps, that's better than dealing with communist nations, or those which are neither, and out for conquests.I agree that we should define the rules. Not being Roman Catholic, I often wonder to what degree they and the center of their faith are entitled.I'm a Republican, but our President should keep his religion to himself, and all the ramifications that go with it. You proved your point with your pointed question re the dali lama, Eddie M... faith, religion, etc. is a personal thing, something we do not regulate or, much worse, insist on people.

"under God," was inserted in the Pledge by Eisenhower, NOT the one who wrote it... during wartime... Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell and the others of their ilk are front and center because leaders have chosen to blend church and state... Christ was peace... these people are warring against even their fellow citizens, not to mention waging war out in the world. You've made a "foot down" statement and I'm with you! katy xox

It's very sadly a world filled with many contradictions these days, my friend. And like you, I often wonder how our children of today can cope, or make any sense out of the numerous mixed messages they receive today from our leaders and role models. I'm glad my long ago childhood was a lot simpler.
