*TO ME*

Poem Artwork

A car, transportation,

Not got one, no elation,

Unable “maybe” to effectively drive,

Even if I were, nowhere without a car could I anyway arrive…

I have not got totally my freedom,

Without wheels, I feel for some reason dumb,

I feel “furtherly” without definition,

Without a car I am unable to through life, navigate,

Just so much I guess I feel like a useless bum…

So, would a car for me be a better feeling,

Would I be reaching to the heights of the driving ceiling,

If I were able again to drive & know that freedom,

Or would I just be from the expense & experience reeling…?

Mostly reeling. With gas at $3/gal an economy model costs about 10 to 15 cents per mile just for the fuel. Even if the POS is paid off, insurance and registration(I'm sure Jersey is not cheap) can easily cost $1,500/year. Drive one mile...that's $1,500 per mile. Ok drive more miles, say 10,000. Gee now it's only 30 cents a mile including fuel. What's that you say? You need tires, an oil change, a new transmission, and a tune up? Screw it, I'm walking.

I think it takes about $8000 a year to own and drive a car. You certainly wouldn't be free from poverty. I'm saving for an electric. Plug 'n Go, yay. I'm certainly doing my part at the moment in not impacting the environment--bike and bus for me. But this is a rural area. Write down the pros and cons--if one outweighs the other you'll have your answer...

I really hope you get the freedom you need and desire soon, Bro. Although I really like walking more and more these days, or riding my bike, I would be lost without my old Exploder.

You sure have got me thinking, Ed. In America (I include Canada here of course), our lives are greatly impacted by the automobile. Thank you for sharing your philosophical musings my friend. Love and peace,

Regis
