Rufuz is a part of our family, but how did this strange relationship begin? Read on and find out, and enjoy...

“Rufuz the Ruthless Dufuz…a background”

ON the internet was found Rufuz,

Such a beauty he was & only a year old,

Part collie, part Shepard & other breeds,

Too numerous to mention or recall.

Rufuz was at the Ocean City NJ Humane Society,

For most of his first year,

Apparently his owner, a woman of some years,

Found herself unable to handle his puppy ways,

And his increasing desire to chase away every guy,

That came a’callin’.

So poor old Rufuz became a semi permanent resident,

At the Humane Society,

Till he was ready,

To be re-adopted by some unwary couple, like us.

When first we saw him,

We thought what a beautiful dog,

Fur the color of reddish blonde & white,

Ears up and always happy,

                  But…

Per the society, he had an “attitude” with a guy,

I didn’t mind an attitude, as so did I,

So off we went to check him out,

Oh boy, what a day that turned out.

His first meeting with us, he kissed Rene’,

And growled at me and backed off with hesitation,

I thought, this is going well & still felt anticipation,

I lay on the floor and tried to play,

Making myself the non-alpha dog just for that day.

After awhile, he must have seen,

I was no threat, I was not mean,

He started to play; he gave me his toy,

He seems to like me, said the societies lady, oh boy,

We could not take him that day,

As making a trip to Chicago, we had the next day,

But when we got home, after two full weeks,

Rufuz still remembered both of us,

And ran out with his new Dad & Mom, to play.

He had to be lifted into the Jeep,

But that day, he made that car his in a way I don’t want to relate,

Got home to Wildwood and lifted his leg on his new moms bed sheets,

Not a good first impression to make,

Especially the first day.

But it wasn’t long before Rufuz became part of our little family,

Mom would take him for long walks up to the beach,

And he would protect her from anyone that approached,

In time we had him trained just a bit,

Didn’t want him as raucous as he could be,

Oh and guess who he bonded to, me, of course…oh joy!

Since that time, he has been more than the family dog,

His friendship has gotten us through many a trial,

He has come so far and learned so much,

          This dog truly has style,

Most of the time, he is quite tame and docile,

But allow him to get started,

And off he goes, attacking his dad fragile hands,

My hope is that he never dies,

At least not before his dad gets old and senile…

You're a good man for rescuing Rufus from the shelter, Ed. We need more folks to do the same. And glad to hear things worked out so wonderfully after that shaky little start, too! Most of my pets come from shelters or the streets. Give me a mutt any day of the week over the purebreds - loyal, tough, and smart they are!

Wonderful story Ed. I also got my pet feline "Freddy" at the Humane Society. He was 10 months old at the time. We were going to pick a tiny little kitten; but when Freddy met us, something just clicked and he has been our king of the castle ever since.
