While greeting my first spring
after moving to Maine
I was surrounded by black flies.
So...
I asked my neighbor, a native...
"How long do these things last."
"Oohhh" he said...
"They'll be here till about the time the mosquitos come out."
"Okay" I said...
"How long do they last?"
"Oohhh" he said...
"They'll be here till about the time the regular flies come out."
"Okay" I said...
"How long do they last?"
"Oohhh" he said...
"By that time it'll be so damn cold...
you won't have to worry about 'em."
I remember spending a few summers in Maine and YES! Those pesky little black flies drove me crazy. I love the answers the native gave you. 'Takes me back!!
You sure got an ear full! Up Nort' where I'm from. We call those black flies, "deer flies." But, they are equal opportunity pesterers and bother elk, caribou, cows, us, and just about anything that moves and bleeds. With short summers, these blood sucking insects have to hurry up and get their blood fix so they can lay their eggs to sleep through the long winter and create the next generation. We are just in the way.
Using that wry Maine humor, you have created one of those classic jokes in a poem. Bravo!
