So true. Friends seem to be most friendly through children and women. When the children and the women go off to wherever, a man can stand alone. My friends are not close, but are an email or phone call away. Recently, I've contacted three old friends just to talk. While they responded quickly by email, none of them has called back.
I think that widows do better than widowers. But, couples that couples have befriended, tend to fade when there is no longer a couple to commune with.
Those friends you mentioned......True friends don't leave you high and dry! When my uncle's wife passed over, his friends would, until the day he died of a heart attack, take him out to eat at a diner at least once a week and they'd all go to high school sports games. If you lived closer, I'd take you nature walking, my friend!
Eh . . . I resemble that remark about "these friends tend to wander astray." Sometimes it is us, however, after our better half dies that we become a recluse.
