Theirs was Sixty four years of togetherness
It was love at first sight.
He was mesmerized by the young cherubic faced beauty
Her innocent face, her humble demeanor, won his heart
She is the one who will share with him his life
“ My fair lady, Metilda ,will you be mine”? He asked.
All of one month old, in the summer of 1958 July,
Her niece Imelda Roseline being witness to this!
In the cradle I was there! she singing lullaby to me
That is when he first came to see her, a custom in arranged marriages be
Soon married , they flew far away ,the two birdies in love!
To Pakistan, to Laos, to Africa , Nepal and England ,
They moved through the years returning home, then moving!
Voyages in the ship, in planes umpteen times!
As a diplomat he travelled , she worked too ,a career, she made
New countries to visit, new places to live i
The beauty of their life , together all the time.
His wish, her command, never a disagreement ever be
Such was the passion for a couple, made for each other for life
Both blessed with long life
Struggles and losses came their way
Children came along, one, two, three ,four.
Cared they were by extended relatives even more
Such a family man was he
in 1985 he retired, moved to America for good
They cooked together , ate together , slept together till end
In old age it was not easy,
Once she fell ,he who went to pick her, he too fell
They have loving children, grandchildren who help nurse them back to feet!
The secret of their lasting relation is simple pure love
Surrendering to the will of God, they carried on
Then when he knew his time is up, what was hurting more, he had to leave her and go
Suddenly one day, like an old tree he fell
He was 92. She is 90 , stricken with dementia she, unaware he is gone
His last words “Please take care of my Metty”for Metilda as he fondly called his dear wife
Their lives is for the young and all to see
How one should be as husband and wife
Even as welfare of others topped list of their deeds
Rest in peace Joseph Sir, he a pure soul be
It is for all to see how his life came to halt without any pain or hurt
The smile on his face will always cheer
Metilda, our metty auntie carried on the baton, her little kind heart
loved to live on...until sje was called to be.
..* In God's loving arms, an embrace divine".
And you a mere babe in the cradle
back then…
A wonderful family story
to pass down the generations…
I’m sure you are so
proud of the people they were and
how they lived their lives…and always in love…
I found this so very moving…
and as always… exquisitely written…

My parents also enjoyed 64 years together when my father died from an hospital infection at 84 after successful heart valve second replacement and a complementary bypass. My mother was 17 and the marriage was of love and necessity because my brother and I couldn't wait to be born.
