With the wildfires in the West and Covid ravaging the country, this poem has been months in the making, the depression finally breaking and the light beginning to shine again, I’m ready to share it with those of similar struggles.

As amber beams creep

Through flaps and slats

We long to dust off

The boots of autumn

And breathe the crispness

But the air is choked

With smoke and ash

Our eyes and lungs burn

And hidden everywhere

Is a little germ

That brings down the mighty

And so we huddle

In our caverns of isolation

And pace to music

Only we can hear

Counting the days

Forgetting the time

In worlds unknown

Where tech is god

Social media is emptiness

We see faces and texts

Knowing no one really

Befriending loneliness

“And hidden everywhere/Is a little germ/That brings down the mighty”. Excellent expression of this pandemic. You have captured the desolation and aloneness. This is a strong piece of poetry. ~~ djl

Powerful sentiments. I'm so glad I don't have smoke-filled days, even the year that an area the size of Rhode Island and Delaware combined burned in Texas. The prevailing winds did not bring that smoke here.

So I can see that the isolation of the pandemic, combined with bad air if you went outside and the emptiness of "friending" on social media, can combine for those of weaker disposition to turn to depression until the sun shines through the smokee and the threat of the pandemic subsides.

So glad you're coming out of the funk and can write again.

I love this eloquent poem.

As your insightful poem posits, there is a slow stealth-like suffocation taking place that is forcing far too many into isolation. And, as the news continues to report, isolation converts to frustration, to anger, to violence. Would that more people who are slaves to innocuous uses of the internet could read your poem, perhaps some changes could at least be contemplated. An arresting poem.

When Nature crashes in tidal waves, the carnage is everywhere. But she always leaves an opening for those with enough strength and courage to get back up and slowly continue on. Like you. You are always a breath of fresh air because...you care. And I am at least your second most devoted follower. Ed
